Son of Sam, which was released as Summer of Sam on these shores, is a Spike Lee production set against the true story of a serial killer who went round shooting young couples in Lovers' Lanes around New York.
However, this isn't actually a movie about a serial killer and perhaps more the pity. Because the murders simply play out as a sub-plot to the relationships between a group of combustible Italian friends and their off-the-wall sexual proclivities.
The movie bears a number of Spike Lee hallmarks such as the use of a handycam and a continuing fixation with New York's Italian Americans but it lacks the insight and tension of its predecessor Do The Right Thing.
It also ultimately fails because it just isn't particularly compelling. There's nothing hugely interesting about anyone. Even the serial killer, when featured, is just a big fat lump. Just, who cares.
Son Of Sam: 4/10.
